A Similan Islands trip sold “from Phuket” can begin with a long drive before you see a boat. On the day trips examined for this guide, a minivan collects passengers in Phuket and takes them north to the Thap Lamu area in Phang Nga. The sea crossing starts there. When comparing tours, ask for the departure pier as well as the hotel pickup time.

Similan Islands tours from Phuket
From your hotel to the boat
For Patong, Kata or another Phuket resort, the useful starting point is your actual hotel address. A shared transfer may collect other passengers along the way. A private car changes the road journey, but it does not let you arrive after your boat’s check-in closes.
As one published example, Thailand Divers lists Phuket pickups between 05:30 and 06:40 for its regular Similan snorkelling day trip, followed by a 09:00 boat departure. Those are that operator’s indicative times, not a timetable for every Phuket tour. An early-bird product may run a different schedule.
The Similan Islands map helps explain the route: the islands are offshore from the Phang Nga mainland. A Phuket pickup does not necessarily mean sailing from Patong or Chalong. The pier printed on your booking takes precedence over older general travel descriptions.
Read the return time carefully
“Back at 17:00” needs a location. It may mean the mainland pier, with the drive to Phuket still ahead. Before reserving an evening flight, restaurant or onward transfer, ask when your particular hotel is expected to be reached and how much delay the operator recommends allowing.
For an important flight, our recommendation is to leave the boat trip for another day. The schedule depends on sea conditions as well as traffic; a successful day at the islands is not a guarantee of a precise airport arrival.
Day trip or a night in Khao Lak?
If Phuket is already your holiday base, a return tour avoids moving hotels. If visiting the Similans is the main reason for travelling north, compare the cost and effort of spending the previous night in Khao Lak. You still have a sea crossing, but you remove the Phuket-to-pier road leg from the morning.
Do not book a hotel change on the assumption that the tour will carry your luggage and drop you somewhere different afterwards. Agree both with the provider first. Our Khao Lak departure guide covers the practical differences.
Compare what the quote actually covers
Ask for a total for your party, including hotel pickup, boat travel, park admission and any transfer surcharge. Then check the programme itself: beach visits, snorkel sessions and scuba diving are different activities. A snorkelling excursion does not include a scuba dive simply because it visits a famous diving area.
A price comparison is most useful when the trips cover the same transport and activities. For the experience in the water, read the snorkelling guide; for several days aboard a dive boat, start with liveaboards.
Phuket departure questions
Can I take a ferry from Phuket to the Similans?
The day-trip products checked here combine road transfers with an organised boat excursion. Do not plan around an assumed public ferry timetable. If you want transport only, obtain written confirmation of the return journey, park admission and permitted island stop before paying.
Will the boat leave from Patong?
Not necessarily. Patong can be the pickup location while the boat leaves from the mainland. Ask for the named pier on the product you are booking.
Can I go straight from Phuket Airport?
Only with an agreed transfer that meets the boat’s check-in deadline. Flight delays, baggage collection and the road journey make a same-morning arrival a poor default plan.
Is the tour available in August?
August falls within the normal Similan closure. Check the park season and opening dates before arranging accommodation around a visit.
Can I finish the day in Khao Lak instead?

Ask before booking. A return transfer to your original hotel does not automatically include a different drop-off point or luggage transport.
