Khao Lak is a useful base for a Similan day trip because you are already on the Phang Nga coast. Your hotel and the boat are still separate parts of the journey: arrange a pickup or reach the operator’s check-in point yourself, then cross to the islands.

The pier name is not the whole address

Thap Lamu also appears as Tap Lamu, Tab Lamu and Tub-Lamu. These spellings refer to the same departure area, but operators may use their own reception and boarding facilities. Seastar, for example, identifies its Similan check-in as its private pier at Tub-Lamu.

For a taxi or self-arranged transfer, request a map pin, company name and check-in deadline. Arriving somewhere in the harbour area is not the same as finding the desk where your passenger details and boat assignment are checked.

Choose the snorkelling programme or dive trip first. Then organise the road transfer around that booking. Different products can have different boats, departure arrangements and return times.

What a day can look like

Seastar’s published Similan programme gives 08:30 for check-in, 09:00 for departure and 10:50 for the first snorkelling stop. Its listed return to the pier is 16:50. This is an example of one full-day excursion, not a fixed crossing time or a promise that another operator follows the same route.

Allow the whole day. Beach time and snorkelling are spread between stops, with time aboard between them. A late-afternoon return to the mainland is followed by the journey back to your hotel. Tell the operator if you have a firm commitment afterwards rather than working backwards from a headline tour duration.

Choose the hotel and pickup together

“Khao Lak pickup included” should be checked against your hotel name. Before paying, ask whether the address is covered, whether there is a supplement, and when the final pickup message will arrive. If you are travelling with children, ask about suitable restraints for the road transfer and properly sized flotation equipment on the boat.

For several nights, choose a hotel that works for the rest of your stay as well. The mainland accommodation notes explain how to compare a Khao Lak base with staying in Phuket. A place near your departure point may be convenient for one early start, but the surrounding beach and meal options matter on the other days.

Keep the booking details together

Save the operator’s contact number, hotel pickup confirmation and meeting-point pin offline. Check who arranges the park ticket and which identity details they need. The current entry arrangements are separate from the boat reservation; “transfer included” does not tell you whether admission is included.

Once the logistics are settled, look at the island map. Koh Miang and Koh Similan are different islands, and the order in a sample itinerary may change with conditions.

Questions before leaving Khao Lak

Is Khao Lak closer than Phuket?

It avoids the drive north from Phuket for the Thap Lamu departures described here. That does not remove the sea crossing or make every Khao Lak hotel equally close to check-in.

Can I just arrive at the pier and buy a ticket?

Arrange the boat and admission in advance rather than relying on walk-up space. Ask the operator about its booking deadline and identity requirements.

How long is the boat journey?

Use your operator’s itinerary. The Seastar example above allows about one hour and fifty minutes from departure to the first snorkelling stop; that is not a universal duration for all boats or routes.

Can I stay on an island and return tomorrow?

Do not plan an independent overnight stay on the islands. A liveaboard booking is a separate boat-based arrangement, not an island hotel or a one-way ferry ticket.

What if the trip is cancelled?

Read the operator’s weather-cancellation terms before paying. Ask whether it offers a refund, another date or both, and check that a replacement day would fit your hotel plans.
